Golf Competitions at Branston - 2011

Tuesday 5th May - Staffs Ladies Vets - Branston Gents
Gill Snelson (Lady Captain at Branston in 2007) is the Staffs Vets Ladies Captain this year and invited the Staffs Vets Ladies to play against Branston Gents earlier in May. Slight delay in posting the pictures, only just worked out how to put a slideshow on the blog.
Beautiful summer weather and many thanks to Athol for some great pictures.

Tuesday 2nd August - Mixed Open 4 BBB

Fi, Me, Mike and Brian
The weather was kind again today and a great turnout for the mixed open. Teams of 2, 1 Lady and 1 Gent with the best score to count on each hole, playing off 3/4 handicap.
I teamed up with Mike E and Brian played with Club Champion Fiona.
Brian and Fi had a great front 9, coming in with 24, then a 19 on the back 9. Several teams came in with a 43 but they came in with the best score on the front 9.
Congratulations to Terry B and neice who came in with a 45 and also to Jo N who won nearest the pin on the 10th

Is there anything I can do about my legs?

Just a little Factor 8 when the sun is shining....
Sunday 24th July - Mixed Friendly, Horsley Lodge
The 1st leg is the away match at Horsley with 8 couples playing, the return match at Branston in August.
A perfect summers day for both teams, originally 10 couples expecting to play but unfortunately 2 couples had to drop out from both teams so it was a day off for the Kings and the Tierneys.
A win by Branston but an enjoyable day was had by all

Wednesday 8th June - Ladies Open
A total of 11 teams played today in the Branston Ladies Open. The format was Stableford, teams of 3 ladies, maximum of 2 from Branston, with the best 2 scores to count playing off 7/8 of normal handicap.
Me, Tina and Jeanette
Mixed weather, some sunshine, some wind and some very heavy showers but a great company.
Playing with me today was Jeanette B from Horsley Lodge, plays off 12 and Tina S from Keddleston, playing of 22.
We didnt have a particularly good front 9 coming in with 29 points but steamed throught the back 9, coming in with a very respectable 40 points to take 3rd prize, plus a great birdy by Jeanette on the 18th to finish.
Congratulation again to Helen H who came 1st with Annabelle M with their playing partner Chris V from Whittington.
Looking forward to playing for the first time at Keddleston on Sunday 17th July with Tina and with Jeanette and hubby Chris in the Mixed Open at Horsley Lodge on 26th June.

Sunday 15th May - Mixed Friendly Breadsall Priory
Every year, Branston play a mixed friendly with Breadsall Priory. This year it was Branstons turn to host the match and we had a great turnout with 12 couples playing for each club.
Due to work commitments, I was unable to play but I met everyone afterwards around 7.30 just as they were finishing the meal. It was great to see everyone having such a good time, there seemed to be an excessive amount of laughter and merriment from every table.
There a 2 mixed friendlies each year, 1 with Breadsall Priory and 1 with Horsley Lodge. We have one mixed friendly each year with Breadall, each club hosting the match on alternative years. The match with Horsley Lodge is played twice each each, one home and one away fixture.

The format is decided by the Lady Captain and is usually matchplay. The teams are comprised initially of committee members and their playing partners / spouses. To make any shortfalls, other club members can be asked regardless of handicap. We had a mixture this year due to the higher than usual number of teams.
Brian, Donna, Steve, Larraine
Mick M, the Junior Captains played for the first time along with Mike E who has recently joined Branston and was the Junior Club Captain at Burton Golf Club only a few years ago. Colin and Janet S also played for the first time, Janet often plays in the Ladies Friendly Club matches so it was nice to have them both playing in the mixed friendly. Mr Captain (John O) was playing away in a scratch match so I kindly left Mr Vice Captain, Colin, in the safe hands of Lady Captain Sue D, who looked after him admirably.

Donna H kindly stepped in and took my place as I had to work and she had a great game with Brian and their playing partners Larraine and Steve. I met Larraine about 3 years ago at Branston so it was a lovely coincidence that they were drawn against each other.

Well done to Branston, a 10 - 2 win so looking forward to the return match next year.

Tuesday 3rd May - Branston Vets v Staffs Ladies Vets
I dont quite qualify to play in the Staffs Ladies Vets but another couple of years and I hope to be there. As the Staffs Vets Ladies Captain for 2011, this event was organised by our very own Gill S and today saw Branston Men played against a team comprising of Ladies from Staffs.

Tuesday 12th April  - Beginners (Rabbits) Trophy
Staffordshire Ladies County Golf Assocation run many competitions for all ages during the year. The County Juniors Club Committee run a Juniors Beginners Competition and it was Branstons turn to host this years Competition (fondly known as the Rabbits) which is open to Staffs Junior Girls without handicaps. The competition is played over 9 holes with any ties decided on the last 6, 3 or 1 holes.
It was around this time last year that Cherry L asked if I would like to play in the Bronze Division which was held at Bloxwich Golf Club, so glad I said yes as I subsequently won the Handicap Bowl. So I've taken an interest in following the work and competitions run by the SLCGA.
Amedlia and Georgia

Entrants must not have reached their 14th birthday before January 1st in the year of the competition and it is permissible for a parent / guardian or relative to be engaged as a caddy. This year there were 10 entrants ranging from the age of 6 to the maximum age, some hhad been playing for only a couple of months. There were 2 x 2 balls and 3 x 3 balls, each player with an anxious parent wanting them to do well.
Each group were escorted around the course by at least one Branston Lady Golf member and although they played their own game and no coaching was allowed by parents, this was an ideal opportunity for them to learn

I took the first group of 2, Chris P and Di H the second group of 3, followed by Sue D and Cherry L with the remaining groups. My 2 young budding golfers were Amelia and Georgia, Georgia's caddy was mum Maria, the current Lady Captiain from Beau Desert. Amelia plays at Stone and was joined by nan and mum Paula.
Lots of support for both girls and it was great for me to watch them play, especially out of the bunkers. Some lovely shots by both of them and a nice result to see them both share the same points at the end of the match.
Although most of them had played in the competition at least once before, it was to good to see them put into practice what they had learnt, ie marking cards, taking out the flag, putting in turn, marking balls on the green and general course ettiquette. Even removing caps and shaking hands at the end of the match was included as well as removing caps inside the Pavillion and Clubhouse

THE BEGINNERS (RABBITS) TROPHY is awarded to the player with the best gross score with other prizes for 2nd and 3rd. Congratulations to Jodie on winning the Trophy with a score of 48 and  to Alice who came 2nd with a score of 50. Three girls Lucie, Georgia and Amelia all had a score of 55 however third place went to Lucy on a better back 6.

After a very enjoyable morning, I just managed to play in the Ladies Stableford after the Rabitts Competition with Fiona, who represented Staffs Junior Girls in her not so far away younger days

So she was able to catch up with Doreen as they both hadn't seen each other for a few years.
A lovely day
