Sunday 25th September

Lady Captain and Lady Vice Captain
The long awaited duel between Lady Captain and Lady Vice Captain took place today at the Branston Golf and Country Club. Forget Daggers at Dawn, this was Battle of the Birds.
..........watch this space for an update. I'm still loading the photos into Picassa to make sure that you appreciate the day in all its glory. You won't be disappointed......
       -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime an update on 2 matches that were played on Sunday 28th August.

Mixed Friendly with Horsley Lodge and Ladies A Team Scratch Match
A busy Bank Holiday weekend for the Club which saw 2 teams from Branston play in 2 very different matches.

Mixed friendly with Horsley Lodge, the first leg was away at Horsley in July and now the return match at Branston which was undoubtedly very closely contested, However commiserations to Horsley and a win for the home team.

Ladies Scratch A Team (drum roll please)
Our Ladies played away against Beau Desert but unfortunately lost 4-1; however an enjoyable day by our team who appreciated the hospitality of Beau and were presented with a commemorative ball marker to celebrate the Club’s centenary year.
This was the Scratch A Teams final match of the season, they had won 3 out of 4 matches with 6 points and a total of 13.5 wins. Following this gracious defeat, the internet results table showed Whittington B had also won 3 out of 4 matches with 6 points but with a total of 13 wins; just ½ a point behind.!.  Other matches were yet to be played in the 2nd Division, so it was a waiting game.

Finally, it has just been confirmed this evening the Scratch A Team have won League Division 2 and have now been promoted back to Division 1 where they rightfully belong, after an absence of just 12 months.

The promotion was by the narrow margin of ½ game over Whittington B and a great result. Support and commitment from our victorious Ladies and other members of the Scratch B Team are second to none!

Congratulations and Well done from all at Branston Golf and Country Club to:
Fiona Briggs
Gill Snelson
Susie Ellerton
Chris Pettitt
Bec Smith
With :
Cherry Loomes
Rita Brotherhood

Many thanks to Chris P for the update this evening.

Saturday 30th July - No Golf for Me (or Maisie)
An early start at the club for us both as Brian was playing at 08.30 in the Scomark / Ansells Mens Major.
Any intention just to get some putting practice in was swiftly cancelled around midday to get Maise to Burton Hospital, A and E.
A total of 8 x rays later showed a fractured elbow so hopefully Jules and Tom will be able to find another Rose to play in the competition on Sunday. Fingers crossed she wont be out of action for too long.
If you want to see the update from Jules, see Branston Members, it will make you smile......

Thursday 28th July - Ron loses his way!!!!!!
Another lovely warm sunny day so what better way to spend an afternoon. Looking forward to the competitions at the weekend, the ever popular Rose and Thorns with a record 35 teams.
Brian and I just chilled and were enjoying a well earned Guiness on the 19th, discussing the format of the competition, Stableford, 1 Lady and 2 Gents - best 2 scores with all scores counting on the par 3's.
We were looking forward to catching up with the other Thorn (Ron D) to have some team bonding. He went out just after us so we would be able to encourage him on the homeward journey down the 18th to at least a par!!!
We saw our other Thorn walking down the 17th after what appeared to be a good T shot, only to see him walk onto the 18th to take his 2nd shot back onto the 17th. Not to worry, we thought, just a one off. His T shot on the 18th went over onto the 17th and he had to take his 2nd shot back onto the 18th from the 17th. Needless to say, we were not unduly worried and didnt feel the need to tell Leigh to wrap his lunch in a course planner!!!

Wednesday 27th July - A Champion in the Making.....

We caught a glimpse of Helen D with an unfamiliar face on the course but it was the very charming Charlotte D on her very first outing on the 18 hole course.

It was with great delight that we were able to witness a lovely little pitch over the water onto the 18th green.
Lovely swing, one to watch I think.............

Wednesday 27th July - To play or not to play
Not really a difficult decision when the weather forecast is good.
A busy day at the club but an invitation to Chris (Pony) M, to play at Branston. Some wild shots  to start with but he soon settled down and as usual enjoyed the game.
A long day and a full house at the club with a Gents Medal, the Seniors also out in force enjoying the good weather, plus a visit from Lichfield Ladies on their annual day out.
The 3 wood was still on form and it was also time check out my short game again. No slicing on the approach shot today with the pitching iron but just the distance to practice now.

Monday 25th July - Summer Pairs
Yes, those cheeky chappies are through to the semi final.
Not sure who they're yet to face but a few weeks off before the next round

Monday 25th July - The Return of the 3 Wood
After a disappinting, rather disastrous day on Saturday, with a day off on the Sunday, it was time to 'kill the ghost' and get straight out and play again.

The 3 wood was taken off the shelf, dusted down and given a chance to prove its worth. After a couple of hits which were a little wild, the ball was finding its way very nicely down the fairway.
My 3rd shot on the 8th landed to the right of the green, just by the bunker so I was really getting some distance with it. My first time on the 8th with my 3rd shot going for the green.
All previous attempts at using the 3 wood off the fairway resulted in topping the ball so it had been left alone for a while. Now that my 4 and 5 wood were consistent, I wanted more distance so it was time to give the 3 wood another go.
I played the ball from just inside my left heel and tryed to imagine hitting the ball down the fairway rather than up into the air, finishing the shot with my arms extending throught the target line. Some more practice needed but at least it felt that the club was square on impact which should help keep the ball fairly straight.
Thanks to playing partners Fiona and Donna

Saturday 23rd July - Elizabeth Plowman  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Sunday 17th July - Ladies Medal  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 16th July - Lady Captains Day
A very wet and windy forecast for Lady Captains Day so it was regret that Sue cancelled.
Looking forward to playing later in the year with hopefully some better weather.

Friday 15th July - Spondon Trophy (see Branston Ladies Inter Club Competitions etc - 2011)

Sunday 10th July - Club Championship, Day 2
Saturday 9th July - Club Championship, Day 1
(see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Friday 8th July - County Shield (see Branston Ladies Inter Club Competitions etc - 2011)
A day off for me in the next round of the County Shield match and as expected, a win by the Branston Ladies over Bloxwich in the Round 3. Next is the quarter finals against Enville, date and team yet to be finalised.

An attempt to do 8 holes with Fiona and Brian in the afternoon ended with some very wet and windy weather. After sheltering for a good 15 minutes by the 12th, it was a unanimous decision to call it a day.

Wednesday 6th July - Academy Course
A Gents Stableford at Branston today and we both needed some practice so we spent from 11am till around 3pm on the Academy Course.
Not too many on the course but the aim was to get some chipping practice in as this is still the weakest part of my game. My short game has always been very weak and at one point, thought I had cracked it by using my 9 iron. However in the last month, I've been slicing the ball so it was back to the drawing board to try and get some consistency back into the game.

After having been reluctant for so long to use full, half, quarter swings with a sand or pitching iron, I spent a good few hours bringing this back into my game. Thankfully the practice paid off and with a renewed confidence, I'm going to use these clubs when I next play, probably late in the day on Thursday.

Grateful thanks to my patient hubby Brian and for giving me the confidence to get these clubs back out of the bag. The Academy Course is great for practicing the short game. We usually spend some time around the bunkers on the 3rd and the 9th and today was no exception. Just a few heavy showers every now and then but the occasional burst of sunshine was a nice change!!

Monday 4th July - Bailey Trophy
This is a knockout competition for the top 8 Ladies from the previous years Club Championship. The final was played at 5.30, well done to Fiona, current Ladies Club Champion.

Sunday 2nd July - Charity Day  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Friday 1st July - Summer Pairs
Cheeky Chappies, Si and Bri

The Summer Pairs is a knockout competition for Branston Men, with 60 pairs playing over the 5 summer months.
Brian and Simon  played their next game in the Summer Pairs and had to wait until the 18th to clinch the win.

Next round is the quarter finals, watch this space. Check out the cheeky chappies who gladly posed for a photo with their well earned liquid refreshement on the 19th.

Thursday 26th May
Withdrawl symptoms today as haven't picked a club up for a few days due to work but looking forward to Friday.
Stuart W is 50 tomorrow and we're off to Greetham Golf Club, near Oakham to help him celebrate along with a select few. Only 2 rounds of golf!!! for those who can stand the pace...
Never played there before, in fact no idea where Oakham is apart from 'the other side of Leicester' (from where we live) towards Peterborough. A long drive but definately worth it, its been in our diaries for quite a few months.

Check this out: A heli-pad can be available on-site at Greetham Golf Club. Nearest airports are East Midlands (45 minutes' drive), Birmingham (75 minutes), Stansted (90 minutes), Luton (90 minutes)
Looking forward to it........... HOWEVER..........I'm missing Round 2 of the Spondon Trophy (Ladies Inter club Knock Out for the Over 50's. (see Blog entry April 15th for details and resutls of Round 1)
Wish I was there, so good club to Chris P and the team - watch this space for the results.

Sunday 22nd May - Jen Tatum, Ladies Major  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 21st May  - No golf, lots of practice
Decided to practice today instead of a game so spent a good couple of hours on the putting green with a 9 iron and a putter.
I worked out how far to bring back the club and the distance it would hit the ground and then roll on  i.e 1/4 or less, 1/4 and 1/2 swing back and then most importantly, to follow through.
Apparently most golfers have the tendency to look up too soon, before they have finished playing their chipping shot. This usually throws off the golf swing and the ball does not go where its supposed to go. One of my ongoing faults with all my shots....
Depending upon the distance, I've tried different irons. Not too confident with my pitching wedge but my 7 and 8 iron, have been the 2 clubs I'm most confident with until my lesson a few months ago when I learnt that the 9 iron could be quite useful. I know it will take a lot of practice to learn which iron to use for different conditions and distances, so I've tried all 3 over the last few weeks to see the different results. Most importantly, I've learnt to take the length of the grass into consideration as well, as it can affect the length of the roll.

Many thanks to Mick M for the little piece of advice - keep the hands in front of the ball......

Friday 20th May - Whackers

Ryder Cup  - 2018
In case you didnt know............France is to host 2018 Ryder Cup on Le Golf National course near Paris. The French bid beat off competition from rival candidates Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands on Tuesday 17th May. It’s only the second time the biennial match between Europe and the United States will be played on mainland Europe—the first was in 1997, when the late Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to a single-point win at Valderrama in Spain and to fund the French bid, every registered golfer in tim'quntry has donated one euro to the cause.

Tuesday 19th April  - parred the 8th for the first time
The usual foursome of Brian, Dave S, Rob A and Frank were joined by myself, Penny S, Sue S and Ron D. We split into 2 teams, format was stableford and all scores to count. 1st team of Penny, Sue, Rob and Frank came in with 105 but were pipped at the post by one point to lose the game.
A glorious day, wish I had taken a photo of us all on the patio at the end of the match.
Managed to par the 8th, my 4th shot over the water with my 4 wood was about 2ft from the pin

Monday 18th April - 9 holes and some practice
Didnt have time to get the full 18 holes in so just did the back 9 and some practice chipping over the bunkers on the 14th. Must remember not to 'stab' at the ball but to follow through.
Managed to get to the 18th, drive was just by the small bridge on the right. Need to be there to get the 2nd shot onto the green with a 4 wood.

A nice gentle 9 holes today with Natalie S, ex Craythorne and now loving it at Branston.

Natalie hits a lovely 5 iron and some nice chips onto the green.

Before I forget, thanks to Joe and Steve in the Golf Lodge for taking pictures

Good Luck and hope you do well

Sunday 10th April - Matchplayers Day (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 9th April
Played 11:17 with Brian, Penny and Si.
We usually play girls against boys but this time it was the Tierneys against the Smalls and the bandits won. No surprise there but as usual a great game with some confusion over the rules relating to raking the sand and repairing pitch marks.

Friday 8th April
Not enough time for 18 holes managed the back nine excep the 17th and 18th.
No-one about so we practiced some chipping over the bunkers on the 14th for a few minutes then the light finally started to fade by the 16th so it was straight to the 19th.

Thursday 7th April
Couldn't make FROGS in the morning but played with Brian at 2:30

Sunday 3rd April - Spring Greensomes  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)
Saturday 2nd April - Ladies Medal  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)
Thursday 31st March - Ladies Stableford  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)
Sunday 27th March  - Ladies Stableford  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)
Sunday 27th March - Lesson
Had a golf lesson at 0800 that morning, not the best thing to do, have a lesson just before you play but as I was struggling to fit one in at another time, then so be it. My previous lesson was in November and my aim was to improve the distance with my driver and woods. The video playback showed that my backswing was ok but on the downswing, I was just using my arms. Having tried to rectify this over the winter use my legs to give me some power, I felt I needed another lesson to keep me on the straight and narrow.
Jake took me through my set up for taking my tee shots again as I’m still trying to learn how to move my lower body correctly on the down swing and followthrough. The video shots show me looking very wooden (to say the least). The backswing is ok but I often loose my balance and end up on the right foot leaning back which feels so wrong. The main problem was that my feet were too close together and the shaft of the club was too far forward. Additionally, as the club came down, I needed to shift my weight with a vengeance onto my front foot and twist the top half of my body. The laces on my right shoe, plus the hips needed to face the target. Although I had been taught this before, it was much hard to put into practice and remember to do it all at the same time.
Then the penny dropped. Jake picked up the basket of balls and showed what would happen if he attempted to throw the basket. By just using his arms, the swinging motion showed that it was obvious there was no movement which would give the distance when thrown. However by moving the legs and torso, the momentum was greater and it was clear that the basket would go much further.

The lesson finished with some chipping which was very productive. I had been using my 8 iron even for short chips however it was apparent that even if I didn’t use the pitching or sand wedge, I need to some down to the 9 iron for those shorter shots. Additionally, the next bit of practice is to work out how far the ball goes with a ¼ and ½ swing with each iron. My aim is to get the ball close enough to the pin to hopefully 1 putt rather than 2 and sometimes 3.

Saturday 26th March
Played at 11.17 with Brian, Simon and Penny. Weather ok but got quite cold towards halfway round the back 9 but fortunately we had the usual shot of Brandy, courtesy of Simon to keep us going.
Brian played with Burts Merry Men and birdied the 1st so he got at least his money back. A few more chances for birdies but alas it was not to be.
The club competitions are starting to be posted on the notice board so its time to start concentrating and get some practice in. My t shots are starting to look a little lack lustre and dont seem to have much distance to them again so time to book a lesson and get them back on track.

Monday 21st March - Mixed Seniors Trophy  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 19th March - Captains Drive In  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Sunday 18th February - AGM
My last game before I go off to India for a month. Brian had already been in Bombay for a week and I was due to fly out on the 21st, so just the AGM and some last minute packing on the Monday.
I wasnt quite sure what the format would be and was looking forward to it.
I started the day with a lovely game of golf with Sue S and a meal before the AGM with Sue, Roger and Gill S. It was a great turnout and the nominations for the Committee also took place. A lovely speech by the outgoing and incoming Captains before Colin and myself were introduced as the new Vice Captains for the coming year.
It was quite an honour and my only regret was the Brian wasnt there to see it but he be there for next years AGM I'm sure.

Friday 18th February
A long morning at the club, Body Pump at 06:15 then golf with Penny and Sarah S

Tuesday 15th February - Committee Meeting
My first Committee meeting as Lady Vice Elect, I dont officially take up the post of Lady Vice Captain until the AGM on 20th Febuary. It was a very relaxed evening and gave me an insight into everything that goes on in the Ladies Section and what the Ladies in the club are involved.

Friday 11th February
Had a game early around 08:30 with Penny and Brian.Captains Farewell Dinner later in the evening, ladies excluded but I'm sure the men had a great time

Saturday 6th February - Captains Farewell Mixed  (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 5th February - Pennys Birthday (the big one!!) Golf at 10/00am in the morning, it was Pennys birthday at the end of January so this was the day to celebrate along with her friend Debbie, a gym member who also had a big birthday but not quite as big as Pennys!! . A couple of t times in the morning for us all to play golf, then a Spin Class in the afternoon. A perfect end to the evening with a lovely curry and some drinks at the Winery

Friday 4th February - Lady Captains Farewell Dinner
Friday 4th Feb was the date we had all been waiting for and as it was the first time I had attended a Captains Farewell Dinner, I didnt really know what to expect. However, it was a great evening with around 40 ladies present and it was lovely to see Geraldine and Ellie join us for the evening.
Entertainment was duly provided by Andy and Jennie who performed an impecable rendition of 'Look at me I'm Sandra Dee'
The FROGS also participated in the evenings entertainment by doning masks and singing their own version of a well known song which constantly referred to Sandras lack of height. The song was recorded onto my mobile phone so if anyone knows how I can post this for you all to hear, then just let me know as I'm sure you'd all like to hear it again.....
Yvonne O recited a little ditty which we could all relate to and it was lovely hear how fondly she recalled moments with her better half. This was also recorded and she can be heard clearly reciting dearly she respected everything he said and did......
The evenings singing was held together wonderfully by the very talented Annie C who played the organ while we all sang merrily away to Yesterday, The Streets of London, Show me the Way to Go Home. We also sang the ultimate version of Yellow Submarine with the wonderfully talented Mrs Helen D providing the harmony during the chorus.

Helen H provided a mountain of jokes, mainly relating to golf and although her timing may not quite be that of Dawn French, she showed potential and is being lined up for future events over the coming months (and year)

Sunday 31st January, Ladies Winter Greensomes (see Branston Majors and Club Competitions)

Saturday 29th January
Played 9 holes only as have a date in Stafford. Meeting Brians 3 sons Jamie, Nathan and Andrew for a curry (with their partners Dom, Step and Karolina)
Didnt play till after 1300 hours as an easy 9 holes in some good light, would have been a struggle to get the 18 holes in.

Thursday 27th January - FROGS

Monday 24th January  No golf today, went to the club and had a good workout at the gym.
Had a coffee and chat with Roger S, he’s missing Gill this week as she is currently in Portugal playing in the Amateur Seniors Ladies Open.

Tuesday 25th January No golf today, decided to have another workout in the gym. Weather not too bad, sun trying to get out but back on proper greens nowLooking forward to Thursday, FROGS again - I'll check out the history and where it all began from Annie.

Sunday 23rd January
Only the 2 of us played today at 09:48. Aim again today was to practice my chipping and maintain the distance with the driver and woods.
To carry or Not to Carry I tend to use my trolley in the summer if the weather is hot or for competitions. I carried my clubs last year by accident. Brian had forgotten his battery so he used my trolley and I used the carry bag. For some reason I quite liked carrying so bought a carry bag sometime last year and have been using it for most of the winter.
My car is relatively small (Tigra) so it makes it easier for transporting my clubs around plus less to clean after a game, especially if the weather has not been too kind.
Apart from a nice shade of pink black, mine is a Srixon with those all important compartments, adjustable straps, plus the right weight for my height and frame.

Saturday 22nd January

Had a really enjoyable 9 holes with Sandra (Lady Captain) and Sue D (Vice Captain). Started at around 13:00 which was probably the latest time to get the full 18 in. Sue D had the luck of the Irish on the first.
A great shot over the water that hit the bridge on the right and then bounced off the flag pole to within a couple of feet from the pin. One never to be repeated or seen again. Sandra was her usually bubbly self even when she duffed her shots. Photo on the 7th

Captains Drive In
The date is set for 19th March. Had a quick chat with Sue a week or so ago, it’s customary for the new Captains and their new Vice Captains to ‘arrive’ at the club via some form of transport which is driven from the 18th, up the fairway to the patio. We discussed our attire and I have to say I’m looking forward to it....

Update on short game I promised my self to practice all my short chips with my 8 iron and today was the day. It took a little confidence to be brave and to realise how friendly and versatile this club was. After a while felt, I was really comfortable using it even for very short chips towards the pin. Each shot after that needed just one putt, rarely more than that.
Driver and 3 Wood - going those extra few yards My driver was true to form and have to thank Jake for helping me go those extra few yards, with hopefully more to come. For me, its all in the hips and not trying to follow where the ball is going. Plus, its remembering the follow through - 'fanny to flight' and all that stuff (thanks Gill)
An enjoyable end to the day with a Chinese at the Wing Wah with Chris and Jeanette B from Horsley Lodge to celebrate their anniversary and Jeanette’s birthday.

Friday 21st January
Played 27 holes today, front 9, then the full 18...
A long day today but very enjoyable. Went to Body Pump this morning for the 6.15am class, then 9 holes with Penny S. Discussed our 'strategy' for the Winter Greensomes on 30th January, not sure if it will pay off but looking forward to it. We've played most weeks together since last summer so we both know each others strengths and weaknesses. We only managed 9 holes as Penny had to shoot off to collect Millie from the Vets, so after a hot coffee, I then played the 18 with Brian.
The weakest part of my game at the moment The course was fairly quiet but we had time to practice our chipping. My short game is probably the worst part of my game at the moment so I've been practicing with my 8 iron. Still need some practice to get the distance right but the shot is fairly straight to the target. Some more work needed especially once we get off the winter greens. Brian didnt use his putter at all today, he just used his 8 iron; think I will try this on Saturday so I could be using my 8 iron an extra 18 times tomorrow instead of putting towards the hole.
Next Game...Playing at 12:48 on Saturday, with Sue D and Sandra H. They dont know that we're playing with them so it will be nice for Vice Elect, Vice Captain (Sue) and Lady Captain (Sandra) to play together.
Think I might take the camera......red sky at night, weather looks good for tomorrow
